Shock Specifications

Developed and extensively tested under extreme Australian conditions, Old Man Emu BP-51 rear shock absorbers combine advanced bypass technology with direct bolt-on fitment for the 5th-Gen 4Runner. Position-sensitive damping increases control as the shock approaches the end zone of travel, delivering composed ride quality at normal height and substantial resistance during heavy compression events.

Overview

Old Man Emu integrates motorsport-derived bypass technology into a suspension solution built for daily usability and serious off-road performance. These BP-51 rear shocks are designed to provide balanced ride comfort at standard operating height while progressively increasing damping force near the limits of suspension travel.

Engineering

A large 51-millimeter bore and expanded bypass diameter increase oil volume and thermal capacity. Bodies and reservoirs are machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and Type 3 hard anodized to promote heat dissipation and corrosion resistance.

Performance

Position-sensitive internal bypass and shim-controlled valving allow damping to rise progressively as the shock nears full compression or extension. Ride quality remains compliant during daily driving, yet significantly firms at the end zones for improved impact control.

Adjustability

Compression and rebound can be adjusted directly on the vehicle, allowing measurable changes in ride characteristics without disassembly. This tunability supports customized setups for expedition travel, technical trails, or mixed-use driving environments.

Durability

Hard-anodized aluminum construction resists corrosion, stone damage, and heat-related degradation, and increased oil capacity reduces fade during sustained off-road use. Controlled manufacturing processes ensure long-term reliability under all operating conditions.
